This list contains information found in Guild archives, on the framed playbills lining the lobby walls, or in the scrapbook sitting on the lobby table. When possible, I’ve tried to include auxilliary information, such as summer fundraisers and benefits. I am much indebted to my wife, Debbie, for having organized some of the playbills, photos, and newspaper clippings from prior to March of 1952 into a scrapbook. Sometimes I listed productions by season, such as 1939/40. Other times, I listed them by year, such as 1932. Accordingly, The Boy of Bisley could belong to either Season 5 (1931/32), or Season 6 (1932/33). There is also a category named ‘‘Productions of Uncertain Date’’. An early version of William Inge’s Pulitzer-winning Picnic is listed there! It stunned me to learn that this American theatrical classic was originally a a prize-winner in the Russell Sharp competition, under the title Front Porch. |
The menu is organized by decade and century. I classified seasons that began in one decade, and concluded in another, as belonging to the decade in which it began. Thus, if the reader is interested in productions performed in 1940, remember to also check Season 16 (1939/40) listed under the Thirties. I grouped summer fundraisers (problematic because they took place between seasons) with the season that ended just prior to their openings. Hence, the reader will find Smoke on the Mountain (summer, 2001) grouped with Season 74 (2000/2001). Decades are grouped by name rather than ordinally within century (e.g., ‘‘Sixties’’ [1960-1969] instead of ‘‘Seventh Decade’’ [1961-1970]). I grouped the Ohs (2000-09) with the 21st Century. I remind any purist who may object (correctly) that the 21st century (as well as the 3rd Millennium) actually began on January 1, 2001, that that date fell within Season 76 (2000/01). I will add more information as it becomes available. |
